In today’s lesson, I’m going to give you a few key tips to create forgiveness in the sand…

And start producing bunker shots that launch high — and spin close to the flag!

But before we can do that, we have to understand how the clubface works with the sand.

If we can get the clubface open — and past the body — we’re going to create the dynamic loft we need to hit the perfect shots.

The ball will pop up in the air and land soft.

For that to happen, we need to focus on two essential elements of your bunker shots: the setup and the splash.

Step 1: The Modern Day Bunker Shot Setup

In the past, instructors would teach that you need to set up open and cut across the ball.

While this is close to being right, it’s not what the best modern day tour players are doing.

So before we work on hitting your bunker shots, I want you to draw a line in the sand on your starting point.

Your line can be reasonably square and facing your target (a little open is okay if that feels better).

Then, work on opening up your toes…

Both your feet should be pointed out and your butt should be sitting down… as if you were doing a mini squat.

This toes out, butt down setup will give you the lower body stability to make the correct move for optimal results.

Now, I want you to feel that you’re leaning and anchoring on your left foot.

Once you start to feel this position, you can move on to step two.

Step 2: Lower the Handle of Your Club

With your other irons you probably have your hands and wrists pointing straight down the line of your arms — and in alignment with the shaft.

But that’s not the best for bunker shots.

I want you to lower the handle (moving your hands down towards the ground)…

This is going to help you get the club open in the backswing and through the impact.

The idea is to maintain this extended club angle into the backswing…

… which means the club will travel outside your hands.

Also, when you lower your hands, it extends your wrists…

… creating a cupping action — or hinge — at the top.

This is all good for pure bunker shots.

Step 3: The Magic Move

Now, you’ve taken your setup… you know where to have your hands…

It’s time to think about the downswing.

This is where my magic move comes in…

With your new lower body stability, I want you to think about pulling the butt of the club down towards your right thigh…

Then it passes the ball…

Then — and only then — you can make your rotation and turn.

Read that again…

Because that magic move will make a huge difference in the contact, height, and spin of your bunker shots.

Step 4: The Splash Check

You now know how to make the swing…

So I want to check your splash to make sure you are coming through the ball at the correct angle.

Your splash shouldn’t be flying straight at the target.

Optimally, we want the splash (or divot in the sand) to be pointing about 20 degrees left of your target.

That means you’re hitting the ball on the correct angle of attack — and your face is open at impact.

Here’s the recap:

  • Square setup
  • Hands low
  • Cupped wrist in the backswing
  • Magic Move
  • Check the splash

If you follow these steps, I promise you’ll be hitting the best bunker shots of your life…

In fact, I guarantee it!
